Survey on stored rice insects in Makassar, Indonesia: a preliminary study

Abstract Stored-product insects in rice are threats to the quality and quantity of stored rice. One methods monitor storage facility is using an ultraviolet (UV) light trap. This study aimed investigate species diversity abundance trapped UV traps government’s Makassar City, Indonesia. was conducted a maintained by Indonesian Bureau Logistics (Bulog) Panaikang early October 2022. Six (4 watts) were hung (h=1.8 m) on four sides pile. Trapped counted identified. Results showed that belonged three orders, i.e ., Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, Hymenoptera. Cryptolestes ferrugineus (Stephens) (Laemophloeidae), Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) (Tenebrionidae), Rhyzopertha dominica (Fabricius) (Bostrichidae) dominant coleopteran traps. The intermediate (H’=1.17), while dominance (D=0.66) high, evenness (E=0.38) low. Those classified as major pests due their potential cause economic damage grains products.
